Laura Cadena

Co-facilitator

Laura Cadena is a NY-based writer, researcher, and artist who combines ethnographic methods and literary studies in her explorations of visual and digital materials. She is a graduate of Columbia University with a degree in Anthropology. In addition to working with the Practicum, Laura has previously worked for NY Review Books and Triple Canopy, and has been published by Hyperallergic and FANDOR.

Michael Mandiberg

Co-facilitator

Michael Mandiberg is a interdisciplinary artist whose work addresses the poetics and politics of the information age. Mandiberg’s projects have been presented at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), The New Museum, Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Art-in-Buildings Financial District Project Space, Arizona State University Library/Museum, Eyebeam, and Transmediale amongst others. Mandiberg is a Professor of Media Culture at the College of Staten Island/CUNY and is on the Doctoral Faculty at the CUNY Graduate Center. Mandiberg is also co-founder of the Art+Feminism Wikipedia Editathon. Mandiberg’s work lives at Mandiberg.com.

Practicum Mentors

Site Visits

During the 8 week program we have guest seminar leaders and weekly site visits. A full schedule for the 2020 Practicum will be posted in spring 2020.

Last year’s mentors were Kerry Downey, Doreen Garner, Heather Hart, Pablo Helguera, Marisa Morán Jahn, Amy Khoshbin, Steve Lambert, Mary Mattingly, La Juné McMillian, William Powhida, Dannielle Tegeder, Penelope Umbrico, and Clement Valla. In addition to working with mentors, we had site visits to MoMa, Pioneer Works and the Whitney. As a group, we visited galleries in Chelsea and Bushwick, and met gallerist Lynn Maliszewski for a walking tour of the Lower East Side. Throughout the summer, Practicum participants also met Harold Ancart, Jibz Cameron, Tamar Ettun, Brendan Fernandes, Mariam Ghani, Autumn Knight, Ernie Larsen, Joseph Liatela, Jacqueline Mabey, Sherry Millner, Rit Premnath, Laurel Ptak, Risa Puno, Karin Schneiderm, Aliza Shvarts, Andrea Steves, Hank Willis Thomas, Valentine Umansky, and Wendy Vogel.
