Michael Mandiberg

Program Director

Michael Mandiberg is a interdisciplinary artist and scholar who creates conceptual art projects, design objects, and publications that explore themes that include environmentalism, collaboration and pedagogy. A recipient of fellowships and commissions from Eyebeam, Rhizome.org, and Turbulence.org, his work has been exhibited at the New Museum, Ars Electronica, ZKM, and Transmediale. He is Associate Professor at the College of Staten Island/CUNY and Doctoral Faculty the CUNY Graduate Center. His work lives at Mandiberg.com.

Valerie Werder

Program Coordinator

Valerie Werder is a Brooklyn-based writer. She was previously head writer and editor at Lévy Gorvy gallery, where she edited books on Gego, Senga Nengudi, Karin Schneider, and Pat Steir. Valerie has also worked for Dia Art Foundation, where she was part of the curatorial team for Thomas Hirschhorn’s Gramsci Monument. She is a graduate of Columbia University’s Critical and Curatorial Studies in Modern Art program. In addition to working with the Practicum, Valerie is copy editor of Triple Canopy.

Practicum Mentors

Practicum mentors host a participant in their studio for an apprenticeship, lead seminar discussions, and serve as guest critics. Full practicum descriptions for each 2018 mentor will be updated in January.

 

Site Visits

During the 8 week program we have guest seminar leaders and weekly site visits.

Last year’s mentors led site visits at their studios, workspaces, and exhibitions. We visited Chloë Bass, Taeyoon Choi, Brendan Fernandes, Doreen Garner, Heather Hart, Pablo Helguera, Marisa Morán Jahn, Simone Leigh, Mary Mattingly, William Powhida, Kenya (Robinson), Dannielle Tegeder, Brad Troemel, Penelope Umbrico, and Clement Valla. We also had site visits with Park McArthur at the Whitney Biennial; Simone Leigh at Marcus Garvey Park; Amy Ritter and Devra Freelander at Socrates Sculpture Park; Geetha Thurairajah at Interstate Projects; and Brendan Fernandes at Recess. We visited the Guggenheim Museum with curator Anna Harsanyi; visited the studios of Sherry Milliner, Ernie Larsen, Amy Khoshbin, and Christopher Willauer; and had individual critiques with guest critic Wendy Vogel. We visited galleries in Chelsea, Harlem, and the Lower East Side; toured the Ribuoli Digital International Print Center; Giphy.com offices; Studio Museum Harlem; New Museum; Eyebeam; and Artsy headquarters; and participated in the Art+Feminism / Artsy Wikipedia Edit-a-thon and MoMA Wiki Loves Pride edit-a-thon.
