Michael Mandiberg


Michael Mandiberg is a interdisciplinary artist whose work addresses the poetics and politics of the information age. Mandiberg’s projects have been presented at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), The New Museum, Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Art-in-Buildings Financial District Project Space, Arizona State University Library/Museum, Eyebeam, and Transmediale amongst others. Mandiberg is a Professor of Media Culture at the College of Staten Island/CUNY and is on the Doctoral Faculty at the CUNY Graduate Center. Valerie Werder


Valerie Werder is a Brooklyn-based writer and artist. Her work has been published in BOMB magazine, and performed at Participant Inc, New York, and Artspace, New Haven. She was previously head writer and editor at Lévy Gorvy gallery, where she edited books on Gego, Senga Nengudi, Karin Schneider, and Pat Steir. Valerie has also worked for Dia Art Foundation, where she was part of the curatorial team for Thomas Hirschhorn’s Gramsci Monument. She is a graduate of Columbia University’s Critical and Curatorial Studies in Modern Art program. In addition to working with the Practicum, Valerie is copy editor of Triple Canopy.

Practicum Mentors

Site Visits

During the 8 week program we have guest seminar leaders and weekly site visits. A full schedule for the 2019 Practicum will be posted in spring 2019.

Last year’s mentors were Chloë Bass, Kerry Downey, Doreen Garner, Marisa Morán Jahn, Baseera Khan, Amy Khoshbin, Chelsea Knight, Jen Liu, Mary Mattingly, William Powhida, Dannielle Tegeder, Penelope Umbrico, and Clement Valla. In addition to working with mentors, we had site visits with American Artist at Eyebeam; Aliza Shvarts at the Whitney Museum; and Betty Yu of Chinatown Art Brigade at Fourth Arts Block. As a group, we visited galleries in Chelsea and the Upper East Side, and met critic and gallerist Lynn Maliszewski for a walking tour of the Lower East Side. We visited MoMA with curator Kelly Sidley; visited the studios of Quinlan Maggio, Trudy Benson, Sacha Yanow, Dora Budor, and Joseph Liatela; and had individual critiques with guest critics Wendy Vogel, Brendan Fernandes, Jacqueline Mabey, and William Powhida.
